The Ministry of Environment in Launching of the National Green Education Strategy
Minister of Environment, Dr. Tamara Al-Zein, participated at the Grand Serail in launching the National Green Education Strategy, under the patronage of the Prime Minister, Judge Nawaf Salam. This initiative comes as part of close cooperation between the Ministries of Environment and Education, the Educational Center for Research and Development, and UNESCO, with the aim of integrating the climate dimension at the heart of the educational process.
During the panel discussion, Al-Zein emphasized that “today’s terminology must reflect responsible education, not only green education,” noting that “the main pillars include infrastructure, curricula, and the extent to which they translate into daily practices.”
Regarding infrastructure, she highlighted “the importance of what the strategy includes in terms of green energy, water conservation, and waste management. However, it must also incorporate sustainable procurement practices and other concepts so that schools become a model that reflects responsible education.”
As for curricula, she pointed to “the need to go beyond environmental and climate knowledge and introduce a philosophical dimension to the approach of responsible consumption, even in the field of digital use,” recalling “the principle of digital sobriety, which requires us to consider the carbon footprint of every behavior, even when it appears environmentally friendly on the surface.”
She added that “the role of the school is essential in grounding all this knowledge and translating it into daily practices, until these practices eventually become spontaneous and automatic, without deliberate effort.”
