An Environmental Awareness Session to students of the  Intellectual Development Foundation- Islamic Social Welfare Institutions 

The Ministry of Environment, represented by Mrs. Lina Yamout, Chief , Service of Environmental Guidance, , was invited to give an “Environmental Awareness Session” on 22/4/2016 to students of the Intellectual Development Foundation -the Islamic Social Welfare Institutions  
The session focused on the four components of the environment, the integrated management of solid wastes that includes: solid wastes reduction, sorting from source, recycling, composting and landfilling . At the end of the session, students received  environmental awareness materials such as books, posters, and brochures.

The Ministry of Environment, represented by the Service of Environmental Guidance, Department of Orientation & Awareness, was invited to give an “Environmental Awareness Session” on 10/12/2015 to the 4th grade students of the American Community School (ACS).

More than 70 students between the ages of 9 and 10 participated in this session. The session focused on the four components of the environment, solid wastes reduction and  sorting from source, as well as renewable energy and specifically solar energy.

At the end of the session, students received  environmental awareness materials such as books, posters, and brochures.

As part of the environmental programmme: “Your Environment is Your Health”, to raise environmental awareness among students, executed by Ghadi Center withthin the Al Irshad and Al Islah Islamic Charity Association, a delegation from the center along with 40 students between the ages of 10-13 from different schools in Lebanon visited  the Ministry of Environment on 9/4/2016 for an environmental awareness session organized by the Service of Environmental Guidance- Department of Orientation & Awareness.
The session focused on the role and the responsibilities of the Ministry of Environment, environmental problems facing Lebanon, importance of nature reserves for in-situ conservation, guidelines for water and energy conservation, as well as solid wastes reduction and sorting from source.
At the end of the session, students received  environmental awareness materials such as books, posters, and brochures

An Environmental Day at the Lycee French Lebanese School- Verdun

An Environmental Day at the Lycee French Lebanese School- Verdun about environmental rights and duties of the citizen

On the occasion of the National Independence Day, the Lycee French Lebanese School- Verdun, organized an awareness day for students on 21 November 2016 to raise awareness on their civil rights and duties, which focused on environmental rights and duties of citizens.

The awareness day began with the arrival of representatives from the public and private sectors, universities, NGOs, specialists in the field of civil right,  as well as members from the Municipality of Beirut. The representatives visited the classes of middle and high school grades to give brief presentations on the topics listed above.

The Ministry of Environment participated in this event represented by Mrs. Lina Yamout, Chief, Service of Environmental Guidance and Miss Anna Chadarevian Head, Department of the Private Sector, where they presented the roles and responsibilities of the Ministry of Environment and familiarized the students about their environmental rights and duties.

The day ended by gathering the students and school members to deliver the national anthem followed by a word by the students’ representative and finally a theatrical spectacle on  civil and environmental awareness.

Antonine Sisters High School Students Visit the Ministry of Environment

As part of students’ environmental activity in their school to raise environmental awareness on importance of biodiversity and sense of responsibility towards the environment, 38 students from Antonine Sisters High School Students from grade 8 had the chance of visiting the Ministry of Environment on March 19th, 2015, and spending time in learning in depth about the Nature Reserves and ecotourism in Lebanon.         

Engineer Lina Yamout, Chief,  Service of  Environmental Guidance, introduced to the students the importance of environmental conservation in general, and the role that Nature Reserves play in conserving biodiversity and promoting ecotourism in particular.

The presentation ended with questions & answers session, where the students had the chance to win hiking bags, books and other gifts that will improve their knowledge on environmental subjects. In addition, all students left carrying references such as brochures posters and various environmental material to use during their school projects

AWorkshop discussing the mechanism of reviewing environmental audit studies

The Ministry of Environment represented by the Urban Environment Service organized a workshop on 27 May 2016 for discussing Decision No: 189/1 dated 14/4/2016  issued by the Minister of the Environment related to the mechanism of reviewing environmental audit studies.
The workshop was attended by a group of  representatives of consulting firms which  are classified to prepare environmental studies, in addition to the Ministry of Environment staff.
The workshop presented the general and technical requirements for the environmental audits, as well as an explanation of the articles of the Decree No: 8471/2012:  “Environmental Compliance of Establishments” under which the Ministry of Environment grants the establishments environmental compliance certificates proving the adherence to environmental standards and application of environmental management system, which allows the establishments to benefit from economic incentives set forth in Law 444/2002 and Law 690/2005.
The workshop presented also the objectives of the Lebanon Environmental Pollution Abatement Project (LEPAP) executed by the Ministry of Environment and funded by the World Bank and the Italian government. The Project finances the abatement of industrial pollution in targeted industrial enterprises and provides necessary technical assistance for ensuring environmental compliance in these enterprises.

As a part of the community service program to raise environmental awareness within their community and mainstreaming of environmental issues in the education sector, the Ministry of Environment received on April 23rd  and 24th , 2019  four secondary students from Makassed,  Khaled Bin Al- Walid/ Al- Horj College.
The program of the visit included a meeting with the Head of Environmental Guidance Service, Eng. Lina Yamout, who explained to the students the tasks and responsibilities of Ministry of Environment. The students visited the Public Environmental Archives Library and helped in organizing and archiving the books and learned about various environmental issues and concerns under the guidance of the Environmental Guidance Service, Department of Guidance and Awareness. The students also helped the Department of Administrative Affairs and Archives, in the Service of Registrar, in sorting out and organizing about 1500 applications for hunting licenses in Lebanon for the year 2019.

In this context, the Ministry of Environment emphasizes the importance of "Community Service" as a mean of enriching school student’s academics learning and helping them to develop their skills needed for productive citizenship.

Developing seven training of the trainer workshops

Under the scope of the project entitled “Demonstrating & promoting best techniques and practices for reducing health care waste to avoid environmental releases of dioxins & mercury”, seven training of the trainer workshops are being developed by the project team with respect to “Environmentally sound Management of Healthcare waste. The first workshop will be held from the 21st till the 23rd of December 2011 at “Hammoud University Hospital” to cover representatives from both Model Facilities selected by the project, namely the previously mentioned facility and the “Nabatiyeh Governmental Hospital”. The remaining workshops will be held Beginning year 2012 in collaboration with the Syndicate of private hospitals with wider coverage on the national level.
 
Topics that will be covered by the training workshops will include an introduction to legislations, introduction to the environmental and health impacts of improper healthcare waste management, organizational structure, planning, designing, developing and implementing good healthcare waste management practices (starting with waste minimization until reaching final disposal methods), occupational health and safety, monitoring and reporting, etc…

Environment Minister: MoI responsible for garbage dossier

NNA - Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq said on Wednesday that "the campaign targeting him over the issue of garbage is evidence of lack of awareness, because the Ministry of Environment is not the one responsible for this file; it is rather the duty of the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities."
 
"It is not enough for civil society and environmental activists to issue communiqués. They have to work with the municipalities and the municipal unions on the process of sorting at source and recycling and so on," he said.
 
The Minister of Environment made these remarks at a conference held by Fransabank at Le Royal Hotel to sign a memorandum on financing sustainable energy projects and to raise awareness and stimulate a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

"We are responsible for the assessment of environmental impact studies, but we endured all the accusations," Mashnouq said, uttering commitment to safeguarding Lebanon's environment by all possible means.

Final workshop of SRLWR Project 

Within the collaboration between the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP) the “Safeguarding and Restoring Lebanon’s Woodland Resources” Project (SRLWR) funded by GEF held its final workshop on the 17th of December 2014 at Hotel Monroe, Beirut.
 
The most important achievement of the project was the implementation of 3 different sets of field trials on different new reforestation techniques, extending from 2011 till 2014, which had not been tested in Lebanon.
 
The main objective of the field trials was to assess the prospects of successful reforestation in Lebanon at low costs and possibly without any irrigation.
 
42 different treatment combinations were tested at 7 sites. 10 of these methods were found technically and financially very promising.
 
A technical report describing all results obtained and including analysis and interpretation of the data collected throughout the years, in addition to recommendations on the best practices to adopt during future reforestation activities has been disseminated to participants.
The report is available at MoE’s  Public Environmental Archives and will be posted soon on its website.

The workshop was attended by Mr. Mohamad Al Mashnouk, the Minister of Environment , Mr. Ross Mountain, Resident Representative of UNDP, Bishop Kyrrillos Boustros, Archdiocese of  Beirut for the Melkite Catholics,   a delegation representing the Turkish Ministry of Forests and Waters, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, research institutions, municipalities, universities, and NGOs.

The workshop consisted of the welcoming notes presented by Minister of Environment,  Resident Representative of UNDP and the SRLWR Project, followed by distribution of certificates to project partners. Later  a presentation was delivered by the Project Manager Mr. Garo Haroutunian on project findings and exit strategy, followed by discussion of the project recommendations and sustainability of results.
